Volunteering in the Starling Conservation Center
Philipp loves to work with animals. Therefore he decided to come to Bali after finishing high school in Germany, to support the local bird conservation center. During his stay in Bali, Philipp got the chance the get to know the local Balinese culture pretty closely. He felt like he "stayed in paradise" during his two and a half month in Bali.
First Days in my Host Family
I arrived in the middle of November. The driver who picked me up on the airport drove me to my host family close to Ubud. The family welcomed me friendly, so the first impression was great. During the time at the host family I collected a lot of experience about another culture and their daily hustles. I saw a lot of different ceremonys during this time and I got to know the typical Balinese food. :D
Bali's crazy traffic...
In Germany I drove already scooter but it was very unfamiliar with driving on the left side with the scooter and I observed that nobody heeded the less traffic regulations here in Bali so everybody drive with their scooter like possible so I would say it is important to have some scooter skills if you want to cope with the traffic.
Leisure activities
At the first meeting I got to know the guys who live in Sanur House. They were so friendly, so I spent a lot of time with these guys. We celebrated Christmas and New Year together. On one weekend I made a west coast Trip. The nature in the national Park is amazing and the Mountain area too. The water world in Pemuteran is so beautiful. The beaches on Bukit are amazing too, so Bali is so diverse. But the downside of Bali is the problem with the trash. Everywhere where you go you see the trash on the side of the street or everywhere in the nature. The trash here is a big problem because everybody, especially the locals, put their own trash on the floor. I loved it to go to surf at Kuta but I was very shocked because the whole beach and the ocean were full with trash. If I was surfing on weekend I saw every time trucks, which collected the trash.
My Work in the Project
I worked at the Starling Conservation Center for two and a half month. I collected so many important impressions about the conservation of the Bali Starling. Every morning I liked it to go to work because I liked it to support this project. My team there was also so friendly and we had a lot of fun during the working time. I assisted the bird keepers cleaned and maintained all cages, I changed the water every day and cleaned the water bowls once a week and I cut the palms in the aviaries. I monitored the released birds in the noon in the area of Green School and at the chocolate Factory and I prepared the meals for them. I was also expected to give my support to the education programs at local primary schools to spread the knowledge about the significance to protect the local wildlife. We built a lot of new aviaries because the center will get a lot of new birds. The week before last, we got six Bali Starling babies. I fed the bird babies with nectar.
The time here in Bali was simply amazing. Bali is one of the most prettiest Island which I ever seen. I felt like I stayed in paradise.
