How it all began...
Since I was a kid, I always wanted to do a volunteer work abroad. After I’ve finished my school, I did a volunteering social year in a school for mentally and physically disabled children. My wish was always to become a teacher. So I wanted to experience a culture far away from my home and understand how other people in different countries deal with the kids in a school. I’ve looked around and then I found an partner organization of Bali Internships. They had many projects, but the orphanage in Denpasar was the most interesting one.
My start in Bali
After I’ve organized everything with Bali internships, my dream finally came true in October 2016. I’ve started my trip at the 26th of October, and let me tell you, it was the best time of my life. I’ve lived in a house in Sanur with 6 different people and after a few weeks we were like a family. I did a volunteer work at the boy’s orphanage in Denpasar, for 17 weeks. I’ve learned a lot to partially gone to my limits but I was caught by very nice people.
The work in the project
I’ve worked there alone, but that didn’t bothered me, I’ve closed the boys, Ibu Budi and the orphanage owner so fast in my heart. I was very lucky to be there. Sometimes it wasn’t that easy, because the kids were not concentrated or didn’t want to study. But I think that is normal. At the beginning I thought that it would be really hard to teach them on my own, but it was okay, because the owner of the orphanage had special things in his mind that he wanted me to teach. I’ve taught them things like animals , countries, numbers, math’s, opposites and many other things. It was very interesting to see how the kids are learning. In the morning shift I had 3 kids, the smaller ones, they were not concentrated at all but I’ve told them if you want to play afterwards, you have to learn something. That worked out, they tried their best. In my afternoon shift I had the 12-14 year old boys, which was a bit easier for me. Because they understood me a bit better and were more concentrated and disciplined. If you want to do a social work, I think it’s a very good experience to do it abroad. That was the best decision I could ever make.
The Organization
Bali internships gave me a warm welcoming and an introduction about Bali, its life and people. Laura and her team are putting great effort into their work. They always help you when you need something. I had a scooter accident after 4 weeks than Rifka came into the hospital and tried to help me with everything. I am very thankful for that.
Bali, my second home...
Bali is totally different from Germany, but the people there are really friendly and open minded. I’ve met amazing people there. It was just an awesome time and totally worth it. Furthermore, Bali is a beautiful Island with so many wonderful places to see, like the rice terrace in Ubud or Nusa Lembongan, the Gili Islands and many temples. Believe me that the sunsets and beaches in Bali are inspiring.
I traveled a lot around and I definitely fell in love with Bali. I was very sad to leave this amazing Island, but if I ever have the opportunity again, I will do another volunteering project there. Bali became my second home, I want to thank all the amazing people and Bali internships to make this time unforgettable.
Terima Kasih and I hope to see you soon, Bali!
