Internship Programs in Bali

Intern in Bali: A Journey of Purpose, Growth, and Connection

Since 2009, Bali Internships has been supporting individuals from around the world to take meaningful steps in their personal and professional lives. What began as a small initiative to connect international students with real-world experience in Bali has grown into one of the most trusted internship and volunteer programs in Indonesia.

Over the past decade, we have placed thousands of participants, students, career changers, researchers, professionals, and senior volunteers into internships and community projects across Bali. Many arrived with questions. Most left with clarity, confidence, and lifelong memories. Some even stayed.

This is more than just a program. This is a community.

A Different Kind of Internship

At Bali Internships, we don’t believe in checking boxes. We believe in learning by doing, in showing up to new environments with open minds, and in creating real connections with the people and places around us.

We work with over 90 host organizations in Bali, offering internships and volunteer placements in:

  • Sustainability and Environmental Conservation

  • Marine Science and Coral Restoration

  • Digital Marketing and Creative Media

  • Real Estate, Architecture, and Property Development

  • Social Work, Education, and NGOs

  • Tourism, Culinary Arts, and Hospitality

  • Permaculture, Wellness, Fashion, and more

We’ve seen participants contribute to meaningful projects, develop new skill sets, and uncover passions they didn’t know they had. Many of our alumni describe their internship as a turning point, a step that gave them the perspective, confidence, or direction they were looking for.

Why Are the Internships Unpaid?

This is a question we’re asked often, and we answer it openly.

In Indonesia, foreign nationals are not permitted to engage in paid internships unless they hold a full work permit. Such permits are designed for long-term employment, not for short-term or part-time internship experiences. They are also expensive and legally complex to obtain.

Our internship programs are therefore unpaid and structured under the correct legal visa framework, which prioritizes education, cultural exchange, and experience not labor. This allows us to host international participants safely and ethically within the boundaries of Indonesian immigration and labor law.

When you join Bali Internships, you are not coming here to earn an income, you are coming to invest in yourself, in your skills, in your growth, and in a way of learning that’s global, grounded, and real.

A Community Built on Trust

We are proud of the deep, long-term partnerships we’ve built with businesses, schools, nonprofits, and social enterprises across Bali. Many of these organizations have grown alongside us. Some started small and now flourish. Others have evolved to meet new challenges, and we’ve walked with them through those transitions.

These are not just “hosts” they are colleagues, collaborators, and in many cases, friends.

And just as we have witnessed the growth of our partners, we’ve witnessed the transformation of our participants. We’ve seen students return home with research publications, portfolio pieces, and new job offers. We’ve seen professionals discover new industries and shift careers. We’ve even seen some participants fall in love with Bali, with their host families, or with each other and start new chapters of their lives here.

Every one of these stories is part of our collective journey. And we’re honored to have been a part of them.

Who is This For?

Our internship and volunteer programs are open to a wide range of participants:

  • University students seeking credit or international experience

  • Graduates and career explorers looking for inspiration or hands-on practice

  • Researchers needing access to local knowledge, communities, or environments

  • Professionals seeking to reconnect with purpose during a sabbatical or life transition

  • Volunteers and changemakers interested in contributing meaningfully while learning

Whether you want to develop your career, change your direction, complete an academic requirement, or explore a different way of being in the world there’s a path for you here.

Why Now?

Many people come to Bali searching for something more and more clarity, more connection, more meaning in what they do. We believe an internship is one of the best ways to begin that search. It’s structured, guided, and focused but also personal, experiential, and open-ended.

If you’ve been thinking about a different path, one that values learning as much as achievement, community as much as career this could be the right step.
