Volunteering in a NGO and private school in Kerobokan for 4 weeks
Maxine had "an amazing challenging and interesting experience for a lifetime" while teaching English and German in Bali. For her it was an experience she "would definitely do again"! Read more about Maxine's daily tasks, her challenges and experiences during her time in Kerobokan.
My daily tasks
Every day in Bali was a new interesting and challenging experience and memory for me. Starting my day driving with the scooter to the school what was every single time very exciting with that crazy traffic (but no worries you’re getting used to it somehow). Normally I worked from 8am until 1/2pm in the afternoon. I had lots of different tasks in the school. On Tuesday I was teaching English in the junior high school (7th and 8th grade) what was so much fun because they understood English very well and I was allowed to organize the lessons and topics by myself. On Thursday I was teaching German in the senior high school with another volunteer (10th, 11th and 12th grade).
The other days I supported the English teachers in the primary school and was playing and inventing games with the children. After that I’ve been in the kindergarten playing and helping the children with their exercises. They all were so lovely and were hugging me all the time. In the afternoon I taught English in the NGO School. That was very challenging because the children didn’t understand a lot of English neither did the teacher. Therefore I had to be very spontaneous and creative: I created flash cards with numbers, colours, animals, fruits etc., easy worksheets and we were often singing songs like the "body song" to learn the parts of the body. Although it was every single time a challenge it was very fulfilling to see these lovely motivated children how they give their best. Friday was sports and games day. So the other volunteers and I invented (sport) games, sometimes with little prices. That was always a lot of fun for all of us.

After school and weekend activities
After school I did little trips with the other volunteers sometimes e.g. to the Tanah Lot Temple or to the Jimbaran Fish Market. At the weekends we’ve traveled e.g. to the Gili Islands for snorkeling, swimming in the Munduk Waterfalls, rafting in the Ayung River, trekking at Mount Batur etc....the nature in Bali is simply as amazing as the people are. I was truly overwhelmed how helpful and friendly the Balinese were although some of them couldn’t speak a lot of English. One thing I’ve learned there is: “Take it easy. It’s working somehow”. And with this motto in your mind you can enjoy your time in Bali far better.
I would definitely do it again!
All in all this project and Baliinternships as an organisation were the right decision for me. First of all I loved the variety of the tasks in the school and the possibility to teach a class on my own. Secondly I always felt well supported by Baliinternships in answering my questions and giving me advise where to go – they made sure if I’m OK all the time. Thirdly I was also very happy with the place I stayed. In Canggu are so many hip coffee shops and bars and the echo beach is an amazing spot for learning/practicing surfing. Besides that I can recommend everyone to do Yoga – you can’t compare it with any other Yoga! Furthermore I was very glad to live with the other volunteers in the same accommodation (3 other girls) as we did a lot of trips together and also helped each other preparing the lessons for the next day.
All in all I would definitely do it again and can highly recommend you this project if you’re interested in an extraordinary memory!
