Internship Programs in Bali

12 weeks Volunteer Tutor in Boys Children Home in Denpasar

This internship was the perfect mixture between free time, preparing time and the actual tutoring. I was assigned to give the children daily tutors in three different groups (the smaller boys in a group of 3, the middle boys in a group of 6 and the oldest also in a group of 6). To prepare the material for the classes, I collected creative ideas as well by asking the boys directly what ideas may interest them and most importantly what they want to learn. I couldn’t wish for a better volunteering experience in Bali.

Preparing the classes material based on the children's interests...

Their interests for example: the solar-system, how the Indonesian government works, the weather and the countries of the world and many more. A really good help to plan my schedule were the two books that Bali internships gave me, I used them quite often, they had texts, vocabulary and lessons about different themes, that I copied for the boys and filled them in together with them.

With the youngest group, I taught simple and easy English, topics like numbers, colors, animals, name of days and months and body parts. Teaching with songs (Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes or Songs for Learning the Seasons and the Months) or to watch videos with them for learning English (The Animals and their Voices etc.) were always fun and easier to get the children’s attention.

With the middle boys I mostly worked with the books Bali-Internships provided me, because they had useful assignment. I handed them the papers in the beginning of the class and if they have questions I tried work on the questions together with them. Also on the next lesson we would discuss about the correct answers in the big group so they could correct their answers.

With the oldest boys I tried to train their English grammar, so we mostly discussed about the past tenses, irregular verbs, Syntax, the Future-Tenses and so on. Also I practiced a little bit reading and pronouncing with them. On Tuesdays we trained our social skills on the „Games-Day “where I prepared a different thinking- or group games for them. Once a week I prepared a German-class for those who are keen to learn a bit of basic German vocabulary. During my last weeks I did a project week about the world-football-championships, because the boys were always so excited about the games. I gave them one week to prepare a topic, such as FiFa, their favorite football-player or the Rules of Football.

“Future volunteers shall have no problem with working and preparing the teaching alone, they should bring social skills and self-confidence. Also they should be a little bit creative with the tasks, so the boys don’t feel bored”

Conclusion

In the end of this project I have to say that I’m really going to miss the work and my students, I really enjoyed spending time with them and learning together. The children are kind, polite and they enjoy learning and are full of interests. The most important thing is to always ask the boys themselves what they want to learn, so you can work in a good atmosphere were you prepare things that are really interesting for them. I would always and anytime choose the work in this NGO Children home again, it was one of the best working-experiences I have so far.

I Wish all upcoming volunteers a really nice time with the children, the preparing is really worth it, it was really a great time working with them!
