My 5 Months Volunteer Story at Jimbaran Children Home, Bali

Read to our last volunteer's story about going out of her comfort zone as a volunteer in Jimbaran children home, Bali, and how the experiences have brought her new lessons in life.

A warm welcome

I was immediately welcomed very warmly by the mother of the house since the day I first came. Jimbaran Children Home, was where I was going to spend my next 5 months and did my service. I could tell right away that the children are so used to meeting strangers, like me. It was so obvious that they have been used to new faces, therefore, it was kind of hard for me to get special attention from them.

But that was not a big deal. It took me a few days to get a deeper understanding of each of their unique characters. It has taught me not to treat everyone the same because each of them was blessed with their own differences. I was also shaken by how good their English was, which in a way helped me with my work there.

They may have not been my standards, but I’ve learned to respect them

During my time in Bali, I learned to be more open-minded towards different circumstances as well as respecting them. I also learned to be more patient with children in difficult situations or conflicts. The works here were far different from what I had been used to, you just need to learn to take your time, and do your tasks without a rush. Working in Bali, especially at this place, is nothing like anything I’ve experienced before.

Besides the lovely family of Jimbaran Children Home, I also love the beautiful landscape of Bali. Before or after work, depending on the shift, I would go to the beach or did outdoor yoga to freshen myself. I also enjoyed traveling across Bali on the weekends, for they have endless places and things to discover.
