Internship Programs in Bali

My 4 Weeks Volunteer Tutor at Boys Children Home, Bali

"I realized that sometimes it is better to listen than to talk and each person is different but interesting in their special ways." Mateusz, Cracow University of Technology - Automation and Robotics Division, Poland

About my work in the project

For the last 4 weeks, I was volunteering in one of Bali Internships' children home, Boys Children House tutor project in Denpasar, Bali. My main task was to provide afternoon additional classes to children living there. I was a tutor for 16 kids divided into 3 groups by age. I was assigned to be there and tutor from Monday to Thursday from 14.00 to 17.00, so each group has around 1-hour class.

My main goal during my 4 weeks volunteer tutor was to encourage the boys to speak and practice more English. It turned out to be challenging, because at first kids were a bit shy, then to break the ice, I decided not only to provide regular lessons but also try to teach them through fun way of learning. We talked about topics connected to everyday life, plans for the future, important issues (e.g. health, plastic pollution) something the children can relate to that can trigger them to speak more and share information with me. Of course, kids at their age can get bored easily so from time to time we were playing some football or basketball instead of having a class or we were just talking about latest movies or their favorite food.

My students and the project

Before arriving in Bali and arrived in the project to volunteer, I had some concerns about how the kids were, but it turned out that they are diligent and curious about the world, they are good listeners and some of them speak good English. At the Boys Children House, I felt welcomed and good, the staffs were kind, although they did not speak much English. Oftentimes, I lost the track of time being at work because I was having en enjoyable time with my students. The best thing about my volunteer teaching program is that my schedule is rather flexible.

During these 4 weeks of volunteering, not only did I learn a lot about Bali and Indonesian culture, but also about myself. I learned to be patient and see things from different perspectives. I realized that sometimes it is better to listen than to talk and each person is different but interesting in its special way.

Indonesia stole my heart

While my stay in Bali I enjoyed so many things I do not even know where to start. First of all, I enjoyed the weather and climate, with so many sunny days. Secondly, I loved Bali as an island, the landscape, the ocean, nature, all of the temples and people. Then I need to mention surfing, as it is my hobby, I had a great time at the beach and I will never forget the waves I got last month.

Indonesian food stole my heart and stomach as well, I loved those spicy, salty local dishes and amazing fruits. And last but not least I had an amazing time on my volunteering program, I was really happy each time I was going to the Boys Children House and I am glad that I could help local community just a little bit.

To sum up, at that time I spent volunteering in Bali last month was one of the greatest in my life, I did not have time to be bored even once. Bringing together holidays in Bali and volunteering at the Boys Children House is a great opportunity and I will strongly suggest it to many of my friends. I would love to come back in the future for sure.
