A Life-Changing Experience

Hi! My name is Vanessa. Volunteering at a children's home in Jimbaran, Bali, was a deep transformative experience for me. It pushed me beyond my comfort zone, exposed me to a new culture, and allowed me to make a real impact in the lives of children. This was my first long-term stay away from home, offering me the opportunity to explore a new environment while also growing both personally and professionally.

Warm Welcomes and Settling In

From the moment I arrived, I was met with incredible warmth and hospitality. My supervisor, Rima, gave me a tour of the children's home and introduced me to the other volunteers and staff. Since the children were still at school, I had a smooth start, helping with household chores and familiarizing myself with my surroundings. When the children returned home, they were friendly and eager to interact, making my first day an enjoyable experience.

By the third week, I truly felt settled in. I had integrated into the daily rhythm of life at the children's home, with tasks becoming routine. I also built strong connections with the children, who had become like a second family. I gained more trust and responsibility, and it was clear I was making a positive contribution to their lives.

Role and Daily Tasks

During my time volunteering, I took on several tasks to help support the children’s well-being. I washed and hung laundry, cleaned and tidied rooms, and taught German language lessons. I also spent time engaging the children in activities like playing, crafting, painting, and drawing. These tasks, though simple, were essential in maintaining a welcoming environment and provided the children with valuable learning and bonding experiences.

Building Connections

One of the most rewarding aspects of the experience was forming meaningful bonds with the children. I made it a priority to connect with each child individually, responding to their needs and making them feel valued. The children were warm and affectionate, and it was fulfilling to see them grow more open as time went on. The German lessons were particularly enjoyable, as the children loved learning new things while also playing fun games.

The Support and Guidance

I was fortunate to have a supportive supervisor in Rima, who guided me throughout the program. Whether it was related to the children's activities or navigating life in Bali, Rima was always there to help. Her support allowed me to confidently carry out my responsibilities, and I was encouraged to contribute in ways that aligned with my strengths.

What I appreciated most about my time in Bali was the balance between volunteering and the opportunity to explore the island. Bali is a paradise for adventure seekers and nature lovers, and I had the chance to enjoy its beaches, temples, and cultural heritage. Some highlights of my free time included surfing in Kuta and visiting Ubud, where I took a silver-making class and enjoyed an ATV tour through the scenic landscapes.

I am grateful to the organization that connected me with this amazing volunteer opportunity. They ensured everything was in place for my stay, including accommodation and program details. The team was always available to answer questions and provide assistance, offering excellent communication and professionalism throughout, which made my experience in Bali seamless and fulfilling.

Overall, my time in Bali was one of the best experiences of my life. I gained a deeper understanding of different cultures and made a positive impact on the lives of children. I left Bali with cherished memories, lasting connections, and a strong desire to continue exploring the world. If you’re considering volunteering abroad, I highly recommend this program—it’s an experience you will always remember.
