Supporting in Children Home in Jimbaran, Bali
"It is amazing how traveling while being a volunteer, could teach you how to be a better person, for yourself and for others" Anastasia, University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany
My first introduction day as a volunteer
After I graduated from university, I decided to travel to Bali for two months and did volunteer work at the children home in Jimbaran.
On my first day, Bali Internships’s staff came to my accommodation and welcomed me in Bali. We drove together to the children home where I met the mother/founder of the children home and some of the children. I was introduced briefly about the project, schedule, then they showed me around the house and explained where I can find certain things like for clothes, craft, lunch boxes for the children and so on.
After that, I had my first scooter drive lesson, and the first 2 weeks were hard and stressful for me as I have never ridden a scooter before. It was better to practice on small roads like in front of the accommodation or in the neighborhood of the children home. It is important to feel comfortable while riding the scooter where I sometimes need to drive carefully because when picking up the children from and to school.
Working at the children home is not always as easy and fun as we thought
As a volunteer, I worked with another co-volunteer and we worked in 2 shifts, first is from 7 am to 1 pm and then from 1 pm to 7 pm. In the morning, I helped to prepare the children's lunch boxes and make sure that the children have put their school uniform on before they left for school. After that, I did the laundry, cleaned the floor and the kitchen and took care of the toddlers. After school, the younger kids have to take a nap. This is not an easy task as they will run around the house and hid from me, but patience is the key.
Working at the children home is not always as easy and fun as we thought. Sometimes the children would drive you crazy. But they were so adorable when you look at them while they are sleeping or when you playing together with them. It was no doubt so much fun to play with them, or just to go out and pick mangoes from the trees, go to the beach and play in the waves or just go for a walk and discover the neighborhood. It just makes me happy when I remember these moments, these memories made my experience undeniably joyful.
My activities during free time
My free time as a volunteer are before and after my shift and on the weekends. During these times, I joined yoga classes, took surf lessons or went to the beach during the week. I really enjoyed my daily life in Jimbaran. On the weekends I plenty of time to ride my scooter to different locations in Bali. Beautiful places like Ubud, Singaraja, the mount Batur or Uluwatu. There are so much to visit, see and experience.
You will learn new things and grow to a better human being
The children are very enthusiastic to learn something new, so it would be better if you already prepared or plan for some activities for the children. As time goes by, you will learn how to survive in an unfamiliar environment, learn about Balinese cultures, or taste Bali’s local food. With the new knowledge and experience that you will get here, it was amazing that traveling and volunteer work could teach you how to be a better person.
