Internship Programs in Bali

Interview with Marcia: My Coral Conservation Experience in North Bali

Marcia’s experience in Bali is a heartfelt story of passion and purpose. At just 19 years old, she connected her lifelong love for the ocean with meaningful action by joining the Coral Conservation Programme through Bali Internships. This journey not only deepened her commitment to marine conservation but also allowed her to make a tangible impact in preserving the underwater world she’s always been passionate about.

My name is Marcia, and I’ve always had an undeniable passion for marine biology. Growing up, I was captivated by the ocean, spending my free time at the beach, snorkeling, and participating in environmental activities like beach clean-ups. This love for the ocean naturally evolved into a desire to protect it. I became especially interested in coral reefs, which are essential to marine biodiversity, yet increasingly threatened by climate change and pollution. When I started considering a career in marine biology, I knew I wanted to get hands-on experience in conservation. This is when I discovered Bali Internships, which provided the perfect opportunity to combine my passion for the ocean with real-world action.

Discovering Bali Internships

I found Bali Internships through a simple Google search. The website’s user-friendly design made it easy to explore various programs. One, in particular, caught my attention—the Coral Conservation Programme. Given my interest in marine ecosystems, this program seemed like the ideal fit to help me gain practical experience while contributing to a cause I deeply cared about.

The Coral Conservation Programme was nothing short of transformative. Set in Jimbaran, Bali, I had the opportunity to contribute directly to coral restoration efforts. The program focused on both practical conservation work and educational activities, giving me a well-rounded understanding of coral ecosystems and the challenges they face.

One of the first tasks I took on was learning how to identify coral predators, such as crown-of-thorns starfish, and how to remove them to protect the coral. I also helped attach coral fragments to underwater structures designed to promote coral growth. These efforts are crucial for restoring damaged reefs and supporting marine biodiversity. Watching the corals grow and seeing the surrounding marine life thrive was incredibly rewarding. I witnessed firsthand the positive impact of our work, as more fish, sea turtles, and other creatures returned to the restored areas.

The Impact of Teamwork and Support

A significant part of my experience was the support from the team I worked with. The staff and fellow volunteers made me feel welcome from day one. They were knowledgeable, friendly, and always willing to share their insights into marine conservation. The positive, collaborative atmosphere created a supportive environment where I could learn and grow.

Beyond the work itself, the team helped me adjust to life in Jimbaran. They provided advice on local transport, cultural practices, and daily life, ensuring I felt comfortable and safe. This guidance allowed me to focus on my work and enjoy the experience without unnecessary stress.

Additionally, learning about the various marine species, including turtles, fish, and the role of corals in supporting life, deepened my understanding of marine ecosystems. The opportunity to engage with both local marine life and the people working to protect them strengthened my commitment to conservation.

I learned a lot through this experience and I learned a lot about myself as well.
