"If I had to describe Bali in three words, they would be food, people, and diving" Derya, Switzerland.

Hi, my name is Derya, and I am from Switzerland. Earlier this year, I had the incredible opportunity to join a volunteering program in Pemuteran, Bali, through Bali Internships. My first experience lasted four weeks, and it was so fulfilling that I decided to return for another round, this time taking on the advanced course.

Why I Chose This Volunteer Program

I have always wanted to volunteer somewhere in the world, but I wasn’t sure where. I knew I wanted to do something related to diving and coral reefs, so I explored different programs through Volunteering Solutions. That’s when I found Bali Internships, which offered an opportunity to work in coral reef restoration in Pemuteran. The program details, the beautiful images on the website, and the friendly way everything was explained immediately caught my attention. I had a good feeling about it, and now, looking back, I am so glad I made the decision to join.

Daily Activities in the Program

Mornings in Pemuteran start in a relaxed way. After breakfast, we head to the Biorock Dive Center for a briefing, where we discuss the tasks for the day and the number of dives planned. Each dive has a specific purpose, whether it’s cleaning the structures, attaching baby corals, placing sponsor name tags, or removing predators that threaten the corals. The work is hands-on and deeply rewarding. In the afternoons, we engage with the local community. Sometimes, we wait for visitors and introduce them to the coral sponsorship program. Other times, we give presentations to schoolchildren, sharing knowledge about marine conservation. The balance between diving and community involvement makes every day unique and meaningful.

This program has been an eye-opening experience for me. Coming from Switzerland, Bali is a completely different world, and in Pemuteran, you also get to experience the real culture, the real Bali here. Unlike the bustling tourist areas, this coastal village allows volunteers to connect with the local way of life. I got to witness and participate in traditional ceremonies, learn about Balinese customs, and enjoy local cuisine.

Professionally, I gained valuable diving skills and a deeper understanding of coral reef restoration. It’s one thing to read about marine conservation, but it’s another to be in the water, actively contributing to the preservation of these fragile ecosystems. Personally, I became more adaptable, open-minded, and appreciative of different cultures. This experience has expanded my perspective in ways I never expected.

My Favorite Volunteering Part

Without a doubt, diving has been my favorite part. Having the chance to dive every day while contributing to an important cause is truly special. The underwater world of Pemuteran is breathtaking, and knowing that I played a role in protecting it makes it even more rewarding.

Beyond diving, the people I met made this experience unforgettable. The locals welcomed me with open arms, treating me like family. Whether it was joining in their ceremonies, sharing meals, or gathering for bonfires in the evenings, I always felt included. The sense of community here is something I deeply cherish. Pemuteran in particular is a peaceful and safe place. Everyone I met was kind and helpful. At no point did I feel uncomfortable or unsafe, and I always knew there were people around who would support me if needed.

Three Words to Describe Bali

If I had to describe Bali in three words, they would be food, people, and diving. The food is delicious, the people are incredibly warm and welcoming, and the diving opportunities are just amazing.

Would I Recommend Bali Internships ?

Absolutely! From the moment I arrived, Bali Internships made sure I felt supported. Rima, my contact person, was fantastic. Even during the long drive from Denpasar to Pemuteran, she provided all the information I needed and made sure I was comfortable. The entire process was smooth, and I felt well-prepared to begin my volunteering journey.

This program has been one of the most enriching experiences of my life. It’s a priceless opportunity to contribute to marine conservation while gaining personal growth, cultural insights, and unforgettable memories. Pemuteran has left a lasting impression on me, and I know this won’t be my last time here—I look forward to returning one day to this lovely place, hopefully not too far in the future!
