Cleaning Coral, Connecting with Culture: Floor’s Scuba Dive Volunteer Experience in Bali
"The overall experience was incredibly rewarding, and I left Bali with a deep appreciation for its beauty and culture." Floor, The Netherlands
First Impressions and Warm Welcomes
My first day was filled with excitement and anticipation. Upon arrival, I was warmly greeted by Bali Internships’ team, the NGO staff and volunteers who were eager to show me around. Despite feeling tired from the early start, I was immediately struck by the warmth and kindness of everyone I encountered. The atmosphere was inviting, and I knew right away that I was in for an unforgettable experience.
It did not take long for me to feel like I belonged. Within just a week and a half, I began to connect with my fellow volunteers and felt more confident in my role. As I became familiar with the tasks at hand, I was entrusted with more responsibilities, which further solidified my sense of belonging within the team.
My Daily Duties and Dive Adventures
Each day brought new adventures and meaningful work. My primary tasks included diving to clean coral structures and attaching new coral, as well as assisting with equipment preparation and maintenance. Additionally, I helped out with chores around the center and had the opportunity to educate tourists about the importance of coral reef restoration.
While my tasks and role were fulfilling, I did encounter some challenges along the way. At times, I felt frustrated by the lack of tasks available, longing for more opportunities to make a significant impact on the environment. However, I quickly learned the importance of showing initiative and taking on additional responsibilities wherever possible.
Exploring Bali's Beauty During My Free Time
Outside of my volunteer duties, I had the chance to explore the stunning landscapes of Bali. One of my most memorable experiences was diving off the coast, where I marveled at the diverse marine life and vibrant coral reefs beneath the surface. Additionally, I enjoyed exploring the beaches of Uluwatu and soaking in the natural beauty of Sanur Beach.
No trip to Bali would be complete without indulging in the delicious local cuisine. From mouthwatering Capcay to spicy Nasi Goreng, I enjoyed every bite of the diverse flavors the island had to offer. Despite facing challenges such as an ear infection and ankle injury, the overall experience was incredibly rewarding, and I left Bali with a deep appreciation for its beauty and culture.
As I reflect on my time in Bali, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to participate in such a meaningful program. Thanks to Bali Internships, I was able to combine my passion for environmental conservation with my love for diving, creating memories that I definitely will cherish a lifetime. I cannot wait to return to Bali someday and continue making a positive impact on our planet's precious coral reefs.
