Interview with David
My Internship Experience with a Recycled Footwear Company in Bali
"One of the most rewarding aspects of interning abroad was the cultural enrichment it offered. Bali is a melting pot of nationalities, and I had the chance to meet people from all over the world." David, International Business student from Hogeschool Utrecht, The Netherlands
David, a 19-year-old International Business student from Hogeschool Utrecht, went on a transformative journey through his internship in Bali. Combining his passion for sustainability with his academic knowledge, David dove into hands-on experience with a recycled footwear company. His three-month stint from March to June 2023 not only honed his professional skills but also exposed him to the island's vibrant culture and breathtaking landscapes. Through this report article, David chronicles his unique internship adventure, offering insights into his day-to-day responsibilities, personal growth, and the rich experiences that made his internship experience in Bali truly unforgettable.
I had the incredible opportunity to intern with a recycled footwear company in Bali. This experience not only allowed me to apply my academic knowledge in a real-world setting but also enriched me culturally and personally in ways I never anticipated.
The Beginning: Why a Sustainable Footwear Company?
Growing up, I was deeply influenced by my grandmother's stories about Indonesia—its breathtaking nature and diverse wildlife. These tales sparked a lifelong commitment in me to preserve and enhance our natural world. When I learned about the company's mission to repurpose waste materials into stylish footwear, I knew this was the perfect opportunity to merge my interests in sustainability and business. Their dedication to creating a sustainable future resonated with me, and I was eager to contribute to their mission.
My Role and Responsibilities
During my internship, I was part of the marketing and PR team. My primary responsibilities included sending out press releases for our new collections to influencers and media outlets, and setting up an affiliate marketing program. This involved constant communication with potential affiliates and influencers, negotiating partnerships, and promoting our brand. Additionally, I was tasked with exploring new consignment accounts—visiting resorts and boutiques that aligned with our values to discuss the possibility of them selling our products.
Daily Life and Learning Experiences
Every day brought new challenges and learning opportunities. One of my major projects was sending out the 2023 press release and coordinating with influencers who might be interested in featuring our products. This required meticulous planning and follow-up, ensuring our new collections gained the visibility they deserved. I also played a significant role in setting up our affiliate marketing program, which involved collaborating with an affiliate agency to streamline our processes.
One of the highlights of my internship was participating in a sandal gifting event at one of Bali's most renowned five-star resorts for a consulting company. This event provided a platform to promote our sandals directly to potential clients, offering invaluable experience in direct marketing and customer interaction.
Meeting Expectations and Overcoming Challenges
Reflecting on my time, I realize that while the internship met many of my expectations, it also brought unexpected challenges. Initially, I anticipated a more hectic schedule with numerous short-term projects. However, the nature of my tasks required a more proactive approach to manage long-term projects effectively. This experience taught me the importance of self-motivation and time management.
The welcoming and inclusive atmosphere significantly contributed to my positive experience. From the moment I arrived, I was treated as a valued team member, included in meetings and decision-making processes. This sense of belonging made my internship even more fulfilling.
Exploring Bali and Personal Growth
Outside of work, I made it a point to explore Bali every weekend. Whether it was spotting dolphins in Lovina, visiting the serene temple, or involving myself in the cultural hub of Ubud, each trip allowed me to experience Bali’s rich culture and natural beauty. These excursions not only provided a refreshing break from work but also deepened my appreciation for the island’s diverse heritage.
One of the most rewarding aspects of interning abroad was the cultural enrichment it offered. Bali is a melting pot of nationalities, and I had the chance to meet people from all over the world. During a photoshoot, for instance, there were 15 people from 12 different nationalities, each sharing their unique perspectives and experiences. This diversity broadened my horizons and enhanced my communication skills, especially in English, which was an essential part of my daily interactions.
Why Bali Internships?
Participating in an internship program through Bali Internships was an excellent decision. The organization facilitated various gatherings, providing a platform to meet fellow interns and build a support network. These events were instrumental in creating a sense of community and camaraderie among interns, making the overall experience even more enjoyable.
Final Thoughts: Bali in Three Words
If I were to describe Bali in three words, they would be loving, beautiful, and creative. The people’s warmth and hospitality, the island’s stunning landscapes, and the vibrant creative scene all contributed to an unforgettable experience. Working at the sustainable footwear company allowed me to blend my passion for sustainability with practical business skills, all while being surrounded by the island’s inspiring beauty and creativity.
In conclusion, my internship in Bali through Bali Internships was a transformative journey. It provided a unique blend of professional development, cultural knowledge, and personal growth. I highly recommend this program to anyone seeking a meaningful and enriching internship experience. Go Bali Internships!
