Cultural Exchange Through Language: Insight into Volunteer Teaching

An Interview with Kristina Ernimulyati from Kuta NGO School

Continuing to cultivate meaningful programs, we would like to always bridge international volunteers with local educational institutions. One such initiative is the volunteer teaching program at an NGO high school in Kuta, where dedicated volunteers are contributing to the school’s English learning experience. To gain deeper insight, we were speaking with Miss Kristina, the mentor teacher for international volunteers and an experienced English teacher at the school.

Miss Kristina has been an English teacher since 2000, dedicating over two decades to education. She currently mentors international volunteers at a vocational high school in Kuta. Established in 1996, this institution has been instrumental in providing specialized education in hospitality, culinary, accounting, and digital business. With a strong emphasis on practical skills, the school ensures that students gain the necessary experience to excel in their chosen careers.

Her primary goal as a mentor is to encourage students to communicate effectively in English. Given that students participate in on-the-job training, English proficiency is essential for interacting with foreign guests and professionals. By integrating international volunteers into the classroom, the program provides students with the opportunity to practice English in real-world scenarios.

The Role of International Volunteers

The International Volunteering Program, facilitated by Bali Internships, has been a vital addition to the school’s curriculum. The presence of volunteers offers invaluable benefits, allowing students to learn about different cultures, enhance their language skills, and gain confidence in speaking English. Miss Kristina expressed her gratitude for the program, emphasizing how beneficial it has been for both students and faculty. “By offering the program, especially the volunteer program, I feel that I am really helpful. I hope that they can share and motivate our students to communicate with the foreigners,” she shared.

Volunteer Participation and Daily Schedule

Since the program’s inception, the school has welcomed several international volunteers. In August 2023, Celine and Deborah from Sweden joined the school, followed by Nada from Germany, who volunteered from September to November. This year, Luisa and Sarah, also from Germany, have continued the tradition, contributing their time and knowledge as part of their university’s social work program.

Volunteers actively participate in teaching, assisting in classes from Monday to Friday. Their schedule typically includes:

  • Monday: Four classes from 7:30 AM to 2:45 PM

  • Tuesday: Two classes from 9:30 AM to 11:10 AM

  • Wednesday: Four classes from 7:30 AM to 2:45 PM

  • Friday: Classes from 7:30 AM to 2:00 PM

Additionally, volunteers often join tourism-related programs and extra-curricular activities, providing students with further exposure to practical English applications.

Why Join the Program?

This Volunteer Teaching program is ideal for individuals interested in part-time volunteering while immersing themselves in Balinese culture. Volunteers commit around 20 hours per week, assisting in daily lessons and conducting after-school English classes. With 229 students enrolled, class sizes vary between 15 and 34 students, ensuring a dynamic and engaging teaching environment.

While prior teaching experience is not required, fluency in English is essential. Volunteers receive training and guidance, allowing them to integrate seamlessly into the school community. Furthermore, there is room for creativity, as volunteers are encouraged to organize extra-curricular activities to enhance students' learning experiences.

A Lasting Impact

Miss Kristina and the entire school community deeply appreciate the contributions of international volunteers. Their presence not only strengthens students’ English skills but also fosters cross-cultural understanding and personal growth.

Expressing her hopes for the program’s future, she stated, “I hope that this program will not stop and will continue for the next year with Bali Internships, especially by the volunteering program.”

For those passionate about education, cultural exchange, and making a difference, the volunteer teaching program at this NGO high school in Kuta presents a rewarding opportunity.
