Anouk's story: Volunteering at The Turtle Conservation Program
Conservation and Cultural Discovery
"When I think of Bali, three words come to mind: loving, beautiful, and spiritual. My time there not only enriched my understanding of conservation but also deepened my appreciation for the people and culture that make Bali such a special place." Anouk, Rotterdam, The Netherlands
An aspiring medical professional from the Netherlands, Anouk decided to step away from her usual routine to set off on a meaningful adventure. With a deep love for animals and a desire to give back, she found her calling in the Turtle Conservation Program offered by Bali Internships. Drawn to the program’s mission of protecting endangered sea turtles while learning about new culture, Anouk spent four transformative weeks volunteering in Bali.

When I first decided to step away from my usual routine in the Netherlands, I knew I wanted to do something meaningful—something that would allow me to give back while experiencing a new culture. That’s when I came across Bali Internships through Volunteer World. Their Turtle Conservation Program caught my eye, and after an interview, I was thrilled to join their efforts in Bali.
The program provides a sanctuary for sea turtles affected by illegal trade and environmental threats. At the conservation center, injured or young turtles are nurtured in saltwater pools until they are healthy enough to be released back into the ocean. Beyond rehabilitation, the center serves as an educational hub, spreading awareness about sea turtle conservation to the local community, tourists, and international volunteers like me.
My First Day at the Center
From the moment I arrived, I was involved in hands-on work. Each morning started with cleaning the turtle tanks and, when needed, cleaning the turtles themselves. This process ensured they had a clean, healthy environment to thrive in. We also checked on hatchlings, carefully assisting any that had emerged overnight to make their way safely out of the nests.

One of the highlights of my day was conducting tours for visitors. Sharing the mission of the center and educating tourists about sea turtles felt incredibly rewarding. Since I speak both Dutch and English, I often led tours in both languages. Interacting with people from different parts of the world and raising awareness about the importance of conservation was a unique and fulfilling experience.
The Joy of Connection
While I loved working with the turtles, what made this program truly special was the people I met. The local staff at the center welcomed me warmly and shared their culture and stories, offering me a deeper understanding of Balinese life. Together, we exchanged language tips, laughed, and formed friendships that I will cherish forever. Outside of the center, I had afternoons free to explore Bali. Whether riding my rented scooter to breathtaking beaches or indulging in local cuisine, I never felt unsafe. The island's warmth and spiritual essence, paired with its stunning natural beauty, created a unique sense of belonging.

Why I Chose Bali Internships
Bali Internships stood out because of their exceptional support. From arranging my visa to assisting with housing and transportation, they made the entire process seamless. Whenever I had questions or needed help, they were just a call away. This program taught me the importance of stepping out of my comfort zone and engaging in meaningful work. It wasn’t just about the turtles; it was about forming connections—with the locals, other volunteers, and the natural environment.
Volunteering at the Turtle Center was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. I’d recommend this program to anyone who loves the sea, has a passion for animals, or simply wants to make a difference. The program strikes the perfect balance between work and exploration, offering a chance to learn, grow, and contribute to a worthwhile cause.
