Internship Programs in Bali

Volunteer's Interview

Cornelia's Journey of Learning, Healing & Connection

“The real beauty of this experience was not only helping turtles but discovering a deeper connection with myself and the people around me.” Cornelia, Germany

After taking a bold step to leave behind her high-powered career in Germany, Cornelia decided to go on a life-changing internship journey in Bali. Volunteering for the Turtle Conservation Program through Bali Internships, she found herself immersed in a world of wildlife rescue, cultural exchange, and personal growth. What started as a sabbatical quickly transformed into an unforgettable adventure that not only deepened her love for sea turtles but also gave her a new perspective on life.

Arrival and First Impressions

Arriving in Bali was an emotional moment for me. The Bali Internships team picked me up from the airport, and everything went smoothly. After a quick stop at a local supermarket for essentials, I was dropped off at my accommodation in Sanur. The area is peaceful and far less touristy than other parts of Bali. The quiet atmosphere reminded me of the Bali I had imagined before the island became a global hotspot.

My homestay was basic but comfortable. Coming from Germany, I wasn’t expecting luxury, and the room met all my needs. It was clean, had a little kitchen, and a bathroom. The hosts, especially the elderly man affectionately known as "Grandpa," went out of their way to make sure I felt at home. The friendly atmosphere made me feel safe and welcomed, which was important, especially as I was traveling solo.

Learning and Growing Through the Turtle Conservation Program

The Turtle Program focuses on protecting endangered turtles, rehabilitating injured ones, and raising awareness about conservation. When I first arrived, I knew nothing about turtles, but I quickly found myself immersed in the work. My main responsibility was to give educational tours to visitors, and at first, I wondered how I’d be able to do it. But within a few days, I was confidently leading tours, explaining the importance of turtle conservation, and sharing the stories of these incredible animals.

I quickly realized how critical this work is. Without organizations like the Turtle Conservation, many of these turtles would be at risk of extinction. I grew to understand the significance of protecting their nesting grounds and rescuing those in need. The most valuable lesson I learned was from the locals. They have a deep connection with the turtles and were more than willing to share their knowledge with me. Connecting with them helped me realize how important it is to not only learn from books but to listen to those who live the experience every day.

Enjoying Bali Beyond the Program

While my days were spent caring for the turtles and educating visitors, my afternoons and weekends were free for exploration. I am an explorer at heart, and I couldn’t resist discovering Bali’s natural beauty. I ventured to waterfalls, rice terraces, and even took a trip to the volcano in the north. One of the most memorable things I did was try surfing for the first time. Bali’s beaches provided the perfect setting to learn.

I made sure to avoid the typical touristy spots, seeking out more tranquil, untouched locations that reminded me of Bali’s past. The island’s rich culture and stunning landscapes made it easy to meet friendly locals and fellow travelers. I met wonderful people along the way, whether on the beach or during a hike, and it was easy to strike up conversations. Bali truly has a special way of connecting people.

The Impact of Bali Internships

I can’t speak highly enough about the Bali Internships program. The team, especially Rima, organized everything flawlessly. They made sure I felt supported from the moment I arrived. A standout moment was the team dinner we had early in my stay. It wasn’t just a chance to meet the team I’d be working with, but also to connect with other volunteers in different programs, like those working at children’s homes. It was inspiring to meet others who shared a passion for giving back to Bali’s communities.

Throughout my time in Bali, I felt like I was part of a family, not just an intern. Bali Internships connected me with people from all over the world who were equally dedicated to making a positive impact. It was a truly enriching experience, and I made lifelong friends who I will cherish forever.

Bali: Healing, Friendship, and Paradise

If I had to describe Bali in three words, they would be: paradise, healing, and friendship. I came to Bali to heal, and that’s exactly what happened. The peaceful atmosphere, the chance to reconnect with nature, and the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of endangered turtles helped me find a sense of peace I hadn’t realized I was missing.

As I prepare to leave Bali, I know this experience will stay with me forever. I highly recommend the Bali Internships program to anyone looking for a meaningful way to spend their time abroad. It was more than just an internship—it was a chance to grow, connect, and make a lasting impact. And I’m already planning my return.
